02/08 - Cancun: Delfines Beach

MIVOAKA: 06.08.2017

After a restful night and a delicious breakfast (I already fell in love with all the fresh fruit), we ventured out into the heat again and headed to Playa Delfines, supposedly the most beautiful beach in Cancun. Along the way, we saw and experienced a lot. We successfully tackled the first hurdle of getting on the right bus without a proper bus stop like we're used to in Germany (thanks Kathi for your tips on buses and bus stops ;-)). The bus ride took us along the hotel zone of Cancun, so we were able to 'tour' it. However, what you see there is not very appealing, to say the least, almost perverse: Over a distance of more than 10 km, it's just hotel, nightclub, restaurant, hotel, nightclub, restaurant, hotel... That's why I was a bit skeptical about what awaited us at the beach. But when we arrived there, it was almost like paradise - if it weren't for the huge hotel bunkers all around, but we simply ignored them.

We enjoyed the great view under a beach umbrella, caught up on some sleep, and read (unfortunately swimming was not allowed that day), until a brief rain shower reminded us that it was time to head back because in the afternoon we were planning to take the ferry to Isla Mujeres, where we had already booked an Airbnb accommodation.

On the way back, we had the pleasure of enjoying a really, really good musician on the bus, playing their guitar and making music, before getting off a few stops later, just like they do here in Mexico. On the way from the bus stop to the hotel, we stopped at a small shop on the street and had quesadillas made by really nice Mexican ladies, which refreshed and nourished us before we arrived at the hotel. From there, we took an Uber to the ferry and continued to Isla Mujeres.
