Another special feature of the city of Yamanouchi is that there is a group of macaque monkeys living here who have made it a habit to bathe in the hot springs. The monkeys use the hot baths to relax from the stress of winter.
Originally, the monkeys went to the onsen in the village, which bothered the residents. That's why a separate onsen was built in the mountains just for the monkeys.
Now there is the Snow Monkey Park. The wild monkeys voluntarily come to the park almost daily. Presumably also because food is scattered there daily. For about 6€ per person, we were allowed to enter the park and move among the monkeys. The macaques behave completely naturally, as if the humans aren't even there.
Overall, a very nice experience. Watching the young monkeys play was a true joy. 🙂
