#34 Siargao - a coconut palm-lined island in the east of the Philippines

MIVOAKA: 03.05.2019

And for Meykel as an experienced surfer, the surfing mecca :-)

Siargao boasts one of the best surf spots worldwide, the famous Cloud 9. Conveniently, we stayed just a few minutes' walk from this beach.

Siargao also has other amazing things to offer, such as a beautiful rock pool in the sea. During low tide, it is particularly visible. There is a cliff for jumping that Mr. Reimann couldn't resist ;-)

We also visited Tayangban Cave. Visiting the cave is not that easy. But once you've made it, a beautiful lagoon awaits you for swimming. Equipped with a helmet and headlamp, we hiked through waist-deep water in complete darkness. For our safety, we had a tour guide with us. For me, it wasn't exactly a walk in the park like it was for Meykel. After all, we saw spiders as big as our hands and bats on the cave ceiling. But we successfully completed the hike and were rewarded with the lagoon for splashing.

Then from Del Carmen (where the island's airport is also located), it took 35 minutes by boat to Sugba Lagoon. There you can swim, stand-up paddle, kayak, and snorkel. Unfortunately, the return trip from Sugba Lagoon wasn't as relaxed. We had the misfortune of heavy rain starting and getting very wet. But that was clear to us beforehand. We deliberately chose to be in Asia at the beginning of the rainy season.

Unlike in Australia, we saw lots of tourists at many places. That's unfortunately the case in the Philippines.

On the island, people mainly get around by tricycles or rented scooters. We also rented a scooter for two days to reach our destinations. After all, here a scooter costs only 10 euros a day.

You have to get used to the driving style of the Filipinos. Honking and accelerating is the motto. By the way, the locals don't have any helmet requirements. Everyone drives or transports whatever they want, however they want. It's not uncommon to see multiple adults with a baby or animals on a scooter.

And it was only when we were on Siargao that we learned what fresh coconuts taste like. We picked them directly from the palm trees and cracked them open on stones.

All in all, it is truly paradise here. The sea and the weather were always great, except for a few rain showers, and the food and drinks are very delicious and above all cheap. We recommend everyone to travel to this island at least once.
