September 11, 1973, not in the United States, but also a Tuesday. 

La Moneda, the government building in Chile's capital, is bombed by rockets from its own military. Salvador Allende, the only democratically elected socialist president in Latin America, is overthrown as a result of a military coup assisted by the CIA and some influential landowners.

Augusto Pinochet, the former commander-in-chief of the military and subsequent ruler of Chile, arrested, tortured or 'disappeared' over 10,000 people during his time in power.

On March 11, 1990, Pinochet's dictatorship finally ended with the free election of Patricio Aylwin. Pinochet died before he could be convicted of his crimes.

 
On August 5, 2010, 33 miners were trapped in one of Chile's copper mines during mining operations and rescued about two weeks later. Safety regulations had not been properly followed for years. Many Chileans still work in mines today.

The best way to experience the history of Chile is in the capital and the nearby Valparaiso, the former economic and government center. The congress still meets here today, instead of in the capital as usual.

If you look at the history of Chile and compare it with other South American countries, you will find many parallels of repression, corruption, CIA influence, expulsion and murder. 

Indeed, Chile is one of the more advanced countries in South America. For example, the corruption rate of police officers is on average the same as that of Germany.
