We arrived in Adelaide with the Ghan, where we were greeted by unusually cold temperatures (not even 20°C). After checking into our hotel room, we went on a guided tour of the city with the help of a relative who lives here.
As we crossed the Torrens River, we looked out at the Adelaide skyline, with the Festival and Convention Centre.
Adelaide Oval
We couldn't miss the Adelaide Oval, the oldest stadium in Australia, where cricket and AFL (Aussie Rules Football) matches are played, which are very popular in Australia - although we had no idea about them...
The stadium is open on one side and anyone can watch the game from the hill without paying an entry fee.
After a short visit to the Anglican St. Peter's Cathedral, we headed back to the city center.Our tour ended in Rundle Mall, Adelaide's main shopping street, where we saw, among other things, the oldest passage in Adelaide, the Adelaide Arcade. Adelaide Arcade This was the first building in Adelaide to have electric lights. The next morning, we continued our city walk in the opposite direction. We also went through 'China Town' with many Asian restaurants and shops. At 'Light Square', we saw another monument to the city planner and founder, William Light. Light Square He wanted to create a city for free citizens and laid out Adelaide with wide, perpendicular streets. Thus, a city emerged that did not originate from a penal colony. It was then named after Adelheid of Saxe-Meiningen, who was Queen Adelaide alongside British King William IV. State Library Afterwards, we visited the State Library, which is one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. Migrationsmuseum Right next to it is the Migration Museum, which provides comprehensive information about the various waves of immigration and the history of immigrants in Australia. Glenelg We spent two days in the capital of South Australia, strolling through the pedestrian zone, seeing one of the most beautiful libraries in the world, and enjoying the sun on the beach in Glenelg. Along the well-designed promenade, we walked under a bright blue sky (and significantly warmer temperatures than when we arrived in Adelaide) and enjoyed the beautiful weather and the view of the sea.
