Sukhothai - Part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site (days 11-13)

Predicted last stop before Chiang Mai: Sukhothai! 😁 Specifically, Old Sukhothai, because the new city is relatively unspectacular. That's why I stayed in a hostel directly opposite the historic park (part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site) in the old town, and once again, I was the only one in a 4-bed room 🤷‍♀️

Since leaving Ayutthaya, I haven't seen many backpackers... so either it's the absolute off-season, or people only visit the really big cities 🤔

In Sukhothai, they definitely missed something. Because even though there were 'only' temples to admire, they were really something special. That's why I headed straight to the historic park on the day of arrival. But this time not on foot, but by bike, as the area was really huuuge.

Already a little sun-damaged 😅

And right after the entrance, there it was: Wat Mahathat (there was already one with the same name in Ayutthaya 🤷‍♀️)

It is considered one of the best-preserved temples from the 13th century and is really impressive.
As I made my way through the originally 200x200m large temple complex, Buddha statues kept appearing.
I don't know why, but I particularly liked this one and I stared at it for about half an hour 😅

About 500 meters away, you'll find Wat Sri Sawai, not nearly as impressive as Wat Mahathat, but there were bats to see in the temple's chambers 🦇😊

There were many more buildings to see, but only a few individual stones have survived the test of time.
That's why I immediately cycled to the next important place:
Wat Si Chum with the Phra Achana, the largest buddha statue in Sukhothai.
It's 15 meters tall...

And last but not least: the 'chilling buddha' as I lovingly called it 😁👍

That was already the end of the first day 😴

The next day, I wasn't quite sure what to do. Travelling on again was too strenuous for me, I had already seen everything... so I decided to rent a scooter (once again, there were no motorcycles🤦‍♀️) and drive to a reservoir.
Also nice to just lie down, read, and enjoy the peace and quiet. 😌👌🏼

Shortly after the photo, I fell asleep...😴😂

And when I woke up, there were goats 🐐🤷‍♀️

Also, just a few meters away, a Thai family had taken over, staring at me very strangely 🧐 Finally, one of them came up to me and asked for a photo. I said of course, and suddenly I had the whole family around me....😅 these racists.. just because I'm white 🤣

Those were my two days in Sukhothai, the next day I continued to Chiang Mai...😁👌🏼
