Surfing and Spanish in Puerto Escondido

The Hidden Paradise...

In the first few days after arriving in Mexico, I quickly realized that my Spanish was enough to get by, but not for much more. And since I heard that you can also surf well on the Pacific coast, it was clear that Puerto Escondido would be my next destination, especially since the combination of Spanish in the morning and surfing in the afternoon was already at the top of my list before departure.

So thanks to Google, I found the Oasis Surf and Spanish School and booked four weeks on the spot. Three hours of private Spanish lessons and two hours of surfing five days a week. Plus yoga, crossfit or pilates training in the evening. Once a week, there was a surprise event where we did a salsa introductory course or released small turtles from the breeding station into the sea. Thanks to the project, about 15% of the animals return to the beach. In the wild, it's only about 1%.

Puerto Escondido is supposed to be the surfer's paradise in Mexico. At the main beach of Zycatela, the waves are monstrous (over 6m) with huge tubes during good swell. Exciting to watch, but (still) not for me. Luckily, there are also beginner spots like Playa Carrizalillo.

In addition to a surf trip to Barra de la Cruz, two and a half hours south of Puerto, we also took a day trip to the lagoons of Chacahua. There are mangrove forests, many birds, or a restaurant half in the water, with fresh fish from the lagoon. But the highlight is the fluorescent water that becomes visible after dark. Through plankton, which shines neon yellow when it moves, a true spectacle is created. One when you bathe in it and see a yellow water drop run down your arm or when you see the fish as yellow stripes swim away from the approaching boat. ¡MÁGICO!

There's not much more to say about it, the pictures should speak for themselves. It was four perfect weeks with great people.
