Hiking in the Northeast

Ebimisami: 01.10.2024

Today, we have planned a hike in the northeastern part of the island. The journey to the starting point in the village of Portas is already exciting. We park at the highest point of the village, right next to the cemetery. Besides us, there is also a Greek family parked there celebrating the anniversary of their father's death. They greet us warmly, and in the end, we are gifted the traditional cake for this occasion.

Our route takes us in a circle through the slopes at the foothills of Pantokrator (the highest mountain in Corfu). The path goes through olive groves and abandoned villages, offering stunning views of the sea as well as the Albanian and Greek coasts. Here, you are closer to Albania than to the Greek mainland. In the abandoned village of Meggoulas, we meet a German couple, and we have a nice chat.

After the tour, we drive on to Kassiopi, where we circle the adjacent peninsula. It is really beautiful, no wonder so many people are here.

Overall, this island, after the experiences on Kefalonia, is a bit of a shock. There are many more people here, and their traces (developments, etc.) are more visible. It reminds me of Mallorca: a beautiful island, but too many people.
