Today we got up early again because we wanted to see Isla Mujeres. This time at a reasonable hour of 6:45 AM. Unfortunately, the night was not great for me. I felt fine and had slept well, but I kept getting woken up by stomach cramps that were accompanied by a sprint to the bathroom🙄
As a precaution, I skipped breakfast and only treated myself to a banana.
We had ordered an Uber for 8 AM to take us to the Punta Sam Ferry. The Uber service works really well here, but it was annoying that the nice gentleman arrived shortly after 7:30 when we scheduled it for 8 AM. It was already the second time we had a panic rush because of this. Well, back to the plan. We let ourselves be driven to Punta Sam, and after the Uber left, we realized that the first ferry from here to Isla Mujeres doesn’t leave until 9:30 AM🙄 So we ordered a new Uber and had it take us to Puerto Juàrez. There we quickly bought tickets and were able to hop on the ferry right away. It's amazing how clear the water is even in the harbor. When we set off and were just a few meters outside, Jörg was able to see turtles grazing on the bottom. The crossing to Isla Mujeres only takes about 20 minutes. Once there, we first rented a golf cart to cruise around the island. Our first stop was Playa Norte, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. And it was truly breathtaking. Okay, we found the water a bit too shallow, but that’s just how it is. Everyone has different preferences. Unfortunately, I started feeling my stomach again🙄 From Playa Norte, you can drive all the way to the other end of the island to Punta Sur. There was a lot to see on the way. It’s just a shame that everything is so littered.
Punta Sur is the southernmost tip of the island and the southeasternmost point of Mexico. On the rocky cliff, there is a sculpture garden and the remains of a Maya temple dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of the moon and fertility. It was also used as an observatory by the Mayans. On a circular path, you can walk around the cliffs and enjoy a fantastic view of the turquoise blue sea and the waves. Unfortunately, I couldn't take many pictures because of my stomach. Since the cramps didn’t seem to stop and I spent more time in the bathroom on-site, we decided to head back. It was really strange how quickly the cramps would come and go. Now my circulation started to act up as well. On the way back to the ferry station, we took a different route and passed by some very beautiful beaches. However, I didn’t want to tempt fate, so we only made quick photo stops. It’s a shame, but sometimes things don’t go as planned. There was a lot more to see, but maybe we will be in the area again someday. We returned the golf cart and immediately took the next ferry. The crossing and the Uber ride back to the hotel went smoothly. I went straight to bed and had Jörg bring me some zwieback and bananas. Gradually, the cramps got better, so I was able to accompany Jörg for dinner in the evening. Yeah, mashed potatoes and plain rice. At least everything stayed down. We spent the evening just in our room, hoping that the next day would be better.
