Day 10: Canyonlands National Park - The Needle

Ebimisami: 01.07.2024

Near our campsite, there should be a Natural Bridge and old ruins, so we start our day with a hike. We walk along the remote road searching for both. Next to the road, there is a canyon with a stream. The natural bridge is not so spectacular, as the hole is horizontal and hardly visible. After a few hundred meters, we come across the old ruins. They are on the other side of the canyon under a rock overhang. Here, the natives built their huts, and today, only remnants are visible. It is amazing how strategically they built the huts in the protection of the canyon. The short hike is 2 kilometers and very easy.
Back at the car, we drive north. First, we pass through Bears Ears National Monument. There, we stop at more ancient rock paintings that are 2000 years old. There are many to see here. The rock is called Newspaper. After nearly 2 hours, we finally reach Canyonlands National Park. The park is known for its various rock formations like Needles (spire-like columns), Mushrooms (mushroom-shaped rocks), and Arches (natural bridges). The many rock formations are massive. After lunch, we visit the Visitor Center and inquire about the current hiking conditions. We choose the Slickrock Trail. After a few kilometers, we park the car and start our hike. The trail is marked by several stacked rocks. Initially, it goes uphill to a plateau and then around in a loop. The sun beats down on us relentlessly, and it becomes strenuous halfway through. On the plateau, we go up and down, climb over rocks. The trail is well marked. We carry 2.5 liters of water but need to ration it. The special feature of the hike is the 4 viewpoints, offering a total of 360° views of the surroundings. Using a map of the area, we see important formations. The last meters are almost torturous. Due to the sun and lack of water, walking becomes increasingly challenging. We are relieved to reach the car after 4 kilometers. There's water and ice for everyone. At the campsite just a few minutes away, we need a break.
In the evening, we can finally light a campfire.

Lagerfeuer trotz Hitze? Wahrscheinlich gibt es dort nichts zu verbrennen.
