Wanaka is located on the lake of the same name and near Mount Aspiring National Park with some mountains.
I used the time there to do a popular hike - namely Roys Peak.
The hike begins about 4 km outside of Wanaka and offers a breathtaking view of the surroundings.
Since I didn't want to walk all the way to the start of the track, I went straight to the iSite after my arrival. There is a shuttle service, but you can't book it alone. However, someone was referred to me who had the same problem. So we communicated, booked the shuttle and solved the problem. Ultimately, not quite so simple...
The next day, I was alone at the pickup point and the shuttle didn't pick me up for that reason. After it turned out that the other person was already at the beginning of the track (took the wrong shuttle...), I was luckily taken with the next shuttle.
The track itself is about 8 km long and snakes its way up the mountain to about 1,500 m. The ascent is very strenuous, but the motivation to hike to the top is the view - the view of the lake is always there and becomes more spectacular the higher you go.
I was very lucky with the weather - bright sunshine and no rain - that's why I had a great view.
All in all, a really worthwhile hike :)
In Wanaka or on Lake Wanaka there is a somewhat quirky attraction - the Wanaka Tree - a tree standing in the water and therefore one of the most photographed trees in New Zealand.
