A visit to Sagres is a must. There is the southwesternmost point on the European mainland. Or at that time also called 'the end of the old world'. During the high season, there is also 'the last bratwurst before America' here, a small food truck operated by Germans. Before Columbus discovered America, this place was considered the end of the world. We can even visit the fortress 'Fortaleza de Sagres' together, as dogs are allowed on the premises. This is a fortress from the 15th century that was destroyed, rebuilt, and expanded multiple times. It survived pirate attacks, earthquakes/tsunamis, or conquests by other countries. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the complex has been a national cultural monument and of great importance for the surrounding area. Between the cliffs, there are many small coves with beautiful beaches. Surfers love them because there are sometimes high waves and the Atlantic clearly shows its unpredictability here. We quickly realize this ourselves when we naively think we can walk past the rocks to a smaller bay with a deserted beach through the shallow water. Suddenly it gets windy, the waves get higher, and the water rises. We have to choose the right moment to not have to swim to the other side.
