So. Yesterday we had our last working day on the winery (whoosh- 2 weeks gone) and now we finally hit the road again with Emma in the streets of New Zealand!
The time passed really quickly and it was a really great experience. Every day, in every weather, outside in the fresh air, physically hard work (I think I've never had so much callus on my fingers) and met many nice people! After work, we chatted, cooked, played billiards and grilled together. On our free Sunday, we went to a beautiful bay with small caves. At the beach, many Kiwis (New Zealanders) got their dinner in the form of collecting shells or catching crabs. One Kiwi even, after fumbling around in rock crevices for some time, pulled an octopus out of the water and put it on his head for a photo. (Unfortunately, Basti only took photos with the camera that day and we can't upload them)
In addition, we saved eggs of the dotterel bird species (which is a really pretty New Zealand ground breeder) from being run over, which are now being incubated further in the hostel. The bird mom built her nest well camouflaged in the winery (see search image) right in the middle of the path where the machines were supposed to drive the next day to spray pesticides.
Finally, we visited a glowworm cave. It was full of larvae of the nasty sandfly (a mosquito-like fly whose bites itch) which glow in the dark. After a short time, when our eyes had adjusted to the darkness, it was like looking into a starry sky! Awesome!
At the end, a photo of a possum as the New Zealanders like it, lovingly called road pizza.
Next stop: Nelson (one of the most beautiful cities in New Zealand).
