This morning we start further south again. Since it was plus degrees yesterday, the road ice thawed a little and froze again during the night. It's damn smooth!
Our destination is the rapids of the Pite Ălven river - also called Storforsen. They are the largest rapids in Europe. I was here once before, 48 years ago. At that time the area was completely undeveloped for tourism and you had to fight your way through the forest to get to the rapids. Today wooden paths lead to and along the river.
However, the elemental power of the river remains unbroken, even though it naturally carries less water in winter. But the ice formations that have formed the water are bizarre and beautiful in their cold rigidity.
We walk very carefully along extremely icy paths and enjoy the natural spectacle.
