Uni in South Africa and The Real Housewives of Capricorn

Ebifulumiziddwa: 11.02.2018

Now my first week of university is already over and tomorrow it continues. Time flies...

In my first week here in Durban, I was at the university almost every day to take care of all kinds of registration stuff. Nobody here knows what the other person is doing, so you have to run from one department to another, sign countless documents, and talk to a thousand people who then send you back and forth. The motto here is: If I don't know or don't have time, I'll just send you somewhere.

No one should complain about German bureaucracy :D

Well, on Thursday (01.02.) everything worked out for me and I was even able to get my student ID card just before the deadline. The picture on it is of course fantastic. Maybe I should apply to a modeling agency with it :D

During this time, I also met a girl who is taking two marketing courses with me and she is really nice. Her name is Amy, she is 19 years old and really sweet. Through her, I also met more students in my first real week of university with whom I get along very well. Through one of them, I also got to a course that I hadn't chosen before, but where I will switch to. I'm really glad that I know people everywhere, because I have group work in two of my four courses and I'm in groups where everyone is very motivated and overall quite good. So everything is going well in terms of studies.

I also got incredibly lucky with my roommates. I get along really well with three of the seven girls. We have already cooked and done a lot together. Especially my roommate is really great. She is Muslim and has a really progressive opinion on the traditions and principles of her religion. So I will write an extra post about her. We just had a great conversation and I need to record it. Overall, in the past two weeks, I have had many interesting conversations with different people that have made me think. I hope to find the time (and the desire) to write some of these thoughts here.

Now quickly about my weekend. On Friday, one of my roommates (Nela) had her birthday and of course I baked her a birthday cake 😊, which was very well received. The day before, on Thursday, we made plans for what we wanted to do (honestly, they are worse at making decisions here than we are). On Friday, these plans were, who would have guessed it, completely thrown out. At first, at four o'clock, Nela was supposed to come in half an hour and then we would go to the beach together. So I interrupted Dominik during our Skype call, I changed clothes and packed my bag. After about 1.5 hours, we decided that we probably wouldn't go to the beach anymore, Nela hadn't shown up yet, and even if she did, she certainly wouldn't go swimming. So I changed back into my regular clothes and we got ready to go out. When Nela finally showed up at half past seven with her boyfriend in tow, her boyfriend decided that he didn't actually feel like going out and overall wasn't particularly happy. While Nela was arguing with him, we sort of implemented our original plan from the day before and watched a movie on TV. In the end, the three of us went to the nearest fast food restaurant without Nela, ordered all kinds of food because we were starving, and I at least got a Cosmopolitan. Despite all the back and forth, we had a great evening. We also founded our version of the American series "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" called "The Real Housewives of Capricorn" (Capricorn is the name of our house). We have the drama. We have the heels. We have the problems.

#therealhousewivesofcapricorn :D
