San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

Weşandin: 13.02.2018

Welcome to Nicaragua!

About 10 days ago I arrived in San Juan del Sur (Nicaragua). As you could read in my last blog post, the journey was a bit challenging, but it was definitely worth it :-)

First, I spent another week at school and had private lessons there. It was great, especially because in Sámara I mainly learned grammar and theory, and here in San Juan del Sur I could practice for 4 hours every afternoon. I lived in a host family just 3 houses away from the school, with another Swiss girl.

One of the students (in the front left of the picture) is even from Baden, what a coincidence! But otherwise, the nationality mix is quite diverse, there are people from the USA, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, and even one from Slovakia.

Once we went to the restaurant "Pelicans Eyes" on the hilltop for dinner. It was a bit more expensive than usual (about $20.00, while you can have dinner for $8-10 at other places), but the view was definitely worth it. From there you have a panoramic view over San Juan del Sur and it's perfect for enjoying the sunset.

Otherwise, I have often made trips to different beaches, such as Playa Hermosa, Remanso, and currently I'm at Playa Maderas and staying in the hostel HC Blau Mar (I can recommend it if someone wants to go to SJDS ;-)). So I'm using this time to relax and have some fun 🙃

On the weekend, my friend Ali from Edelweiss spontaneously visited me. He had to go from the reserve to San José and decided the day before to come and visit me. Nice, you took the long journey (7 hours by bus) just to visit me 🤗

On Sunday, Sarina (another Swiss girl) also came to visit me. I got to know her at school in Sámara. She still has 2 weeks left before she goes back to Switzerland, so we are traveling together through Nicaragua.

From the hill where the big Jesus statue stands (similar to Rio de Janeiro), you have a great view over the whole city. It's definitely worth the 30-minute uphill walk. The entrance fee is $2.

The atmosphere here during the sunset is very special, but the hunger took over before that, so we went back down early.

Tomorrow we are going to Isla de Ometepe in Lago de Nicaragua (the largest freshwater lake in Central America) with two volcanoes that can be climbed. But I heard that the hikes are quite exhausting (about 8 hours up and down), so we'll see if we're up for that in this heat ;-)

You'll definitely find out more about it in one of my next blog posts 🤗
