I've known the abbreviation 'WG' since my childhood. This living arrangement has been around for a very long time, apparently!?
But it wasn't until past my 50s that I got the chance to experience it myself. I'm talking about a shared apartment with multiple residents. I don't consider the living arrangement with Andi in my younger years or the family household on Klosterstrasse 4 in the same sense. Well, in essence, they are living communities too, but let's leave that out for now.
Basically, I'm more of a 'prefer-to-be-alone' type. You can do whatever you want when you're alone. My strength is more in silence than in chattering and listening, and I prefer to let others take the lead.
I've noticed that this is easily possible in this shared apartment. You don't always have to speak, you can also just sit in silence. For example, in the morning. None of us are very chatty in the morning - unlike the dogs outside!
Yesterday, I was in a bad mood and incredibly tired, despite getting enough sleep. Those kind of days happen and they don't bother anyone. Everyone can cook for themselves or, like today, a little for themselves and a little for others. Laura prepared a huge pot of pasta because we're having a farewell and end-of-school-year grill party tomorrow evening. As I write this, she's working on the pasta salad and it turned out delicious. Of course, we had some of the pasta for dinner tonight as well. She simply mashed up an avocado and used it as a sauce. Since I'm not a fan of avocado, I made my own sauce. Diana had some pieces of chicken in the pan, quite dry because they had no sauce. So, I fried them again in olive oil, added milk, and... that was the plan, thickening it with flour. But there was no flour. No breadcrumbs or anything else that seemed suitable as a binder. But it tasted good, even though it was very liquid and the milk didn't mix with the olive oil.
Yes, that's how this shared apartment works quite well...
You might be wondering what I contributed to the meal. Well, nothing directly for eating.
Instead, I washed and dried the dishes. If you can't cook, then you have to find another way to contribute and do your share in the shared apartment. Also, this morning, I collected the garbage bags again and dropped them off at the disposal site.
Speaking of not being able to cook: you should have seen the omelette this morning! And taste it too!!! Perfect! Not halved, no, divided into thirds in the pan, evenly golden brown, properly seasoned, and the perfect consistency.
(But that was only for me! I didn't expect it to turn out so well...)
