Day 4 - Kalmar-Växjö

Weşandin: 11.08.2017

After another excellent night and a mediocre breakfast, we saddle up our iron steeds and start the navigation system. Växjö is our destination for today. One last look from our hotel room, and off we go.

According to the navigation system, we have 142 KM ahead of us today. So we have a very large time window for sufficient breaks and other spontaneities. We decide to go to Öland before we continue on our actual route.

What can be said about the island? There is a road from north to south, which is rather boring to drive on. We are drawn to Borgholm, let's see what it looks like off the main road. When we arrive in Borgholm, we are greeted by many small roads with typical Swedish houses and a pedestrian zone. Unfortunately, we are a bit early and many shops are not yet open. There is not much going on here before 11:00.

We now decide to continue on our route and leave Öland. Once on the mainland, we briefly pass through Kalmar and disappear inland. Fascinating - we are driving on the country road, surrounded by forest on both sides. It feels like we are the only ones on this road. We stop and stretch our legs on the road... no one is coming. You could probably take a nap on this road. So I lay down and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Okay, we want to continue, there must be something else here besides a road that is only used by us?! After a short time, we realize that not much is happening here. But there were signs on the side of the road that pointed to a bathing spot. Looking for the next sign, we continue. And there it was... next right and then at some point....! But wait, what's this? In front of us is a motorcyclist's paradise. A road that is also rarely used, where it only goes left, right, up and down. This is going to be fun. With a kick on the shift lever, we signal to our steeds that the cruising mode is over. It's time to lean into the curves. Both V2 engines rev up and off we go... YEEEEHAAAA....!

After about 10 KM, we see the sign for the bathing spot in the corner of our eyes. Damn, we passed it. We leave the fun road and follow a sandy field path towards the lake. And there it was, a lake full of Germans. We are amazed.

We are somewhere in Aboda.

We stay here for a while and then hop back on the bikes, because we still have the 10 KM long fun road ahead of us. We have some more fun and then return to our original route. What an experience!
For the rest of this stretch, we have noticed that a cluster of 2 houses is already considered a village, or there are small villages that are completely painted in Swedish red, even the church was not spared.
After a while, we stop again at a lake. We were thirsty for coffee.

It's now just under 60 KM to Växjö, which we cover in one go.
We check into our hotel, right in the center, and give our bikes a cozy place to stay as well.

After freshening up quickly, we go to the center. We need something to eat. We find the Umami Monkey, they serve, among other things, fashion burgers... whatever that may be?
The menu is only available in Swedish, so we order a steak (we could just about tell) and a burger, which seemed to consist of something with cheese, bacon, and honey (!?). Once again, we find that this 'thing' is really delicious. Taking a leap of faith paid off.
Full and satisfied, we return to the hotel, where we end the evening comfortably.
Along the way, we met two friendly Swedish women and it was okay to take a picture.

In the end, we had 240 KM on the clock... so much for spontaneity.

Tomorrow, we will continue to Helsingborg.

Conclusion after about half of the total tour:
- In Sweden, there are red villages
- Three-star hotels can be more expensive than four-star hotels
- If you want to stop wherever it's beautiful, you won't get far.
- I can pay with my Visa card, but I can't fuel up
- If you take a lock, you should also take the key
- We are so relaxed that we keep blinking even after turning.
