On Monday, May 13, we check in in Bergen in the evening. After a few inquiries, we can park our bikes in the car deck. The MS Vesteralen is well occupied on this trip, which we can see right away at the buffet in the evening in the dining room. In beautiful evening light, we leave on time at 10:30 p.m. heading north.
Tuesday, May 14: In the morning, we sail along the coast on open sea, so our ship rocks a bit. But still easy to digest. We have breakfast late, the rush at the buffet is not for us.
At noon we reach Alesund, the starting point for Geirangerfjord and Sunnmore, a popular ski touring area. From the mountain Aksla we have a nice view of mountains, fjords and the city. It is known for its Art Nouveau buildings, which were built there after a devastating fire in 1904. By the way, also thanks to generous support from Kaiser Wilhelm II.
Wednesday, May 15: We reach Trondheim early in the morning. After breakfast, we go on a city tour. The outstanding building is the Nidaros Cathedral, dating back to the 11th century, on the Nidelva river. Over the Gamle Bybroen, the old city bridge, which connects the center with the Kristiansten Fortress. Today you can reach the district Bakklandet with many beautiful old wooden houses over it. Right after the bridge, there is an elevator for bicycles, you hang your right foot in the rail and then you can be pulled up the mountain.
In the evening, after a lecture about the Vikings and a calm journey, we arrive in Rorvik.
