Stopover Bangkok

After a sad and beautiful farewell with tears in our eyes (thanks to everyone who was there!), Toni and I set off for the other side of the world. We had a total of 2 times 13 hours of flight time and 11 hours of time difference ahead of us. Our first stop on the way to the Shire took us to Bangkok for 3 days. The flight, with a layover in Dubai, was exhausting, but the journey was bearable and we initially had hardly any problems with jet lag. The extreme heat with a perceived humidity of 1000% was much more of a burden; more for some, less for others ;-) Fortunately, nearly all means of transportation and buildings are air-conditioned there. After the 1.5-hour taxi ride to the hotel, we were still tired and longed for our giant 3x2m bed. During our first exploration of the city the next day, we encountered incredible crowds and smells, as well as breathtaking views (like from the sky bar right next to our hotel) and beautiful temple complexes.
On our second day, we ventured confidently into public transportation, such as the water taxi, which worked surprisingly well. The ferry ride from one side of the river to the other was especially surprising, which we could hardly afford with a ticket price of 3 Baht (equivalent to about 8 cents). So we could enjoy ourselves. The people were always friendly and the food didn't upset our stomachs. On the last evening, we finally visited Kao San Road. In retrospect, this could have been spared. There is not much to see there except for drunk tourists and grilled giant spiders (who does that?!). The next day we left Bangkok and were full of anticipation for our new home for the next 10 months. Even though we only spent a few days in this city of extremes, we quickly got used to the hustle and bustle and the customs there. Being there was definitely worth a visit, even though we were glad to move on.
