It may be hard to believe, but you can go skiing at Lake Baikal. Today we went from Ulan-Ude to Lake Baikal, or rather the Baikal Sea. The lake is almost as long as Germany and contains about 20% of the world's freshwater reserves. The lake is not really a lake, but rather a rift in the earth. That's why there are about 1000 earthquakes here every year, most of which go unnoticed. Let's hope that while we're here, there won't be a major earthquake. The water temperature of the lake is only about 10 degrees, so we just dipped our fingertips in for the first contact.
An oligarch has decided to build a ski resort (on the eastern side of the lake) in Baikalsk. Our hotel was right next to the ski lift and the mysterious Bugel-Vugel Bar. It wasn't clear what that meant, but it didn't matter later in the evening.
