Per evitare ulteriori noiose percorrenze attraverso la noiosa Pampa argentina, dobbiamo tornare in Cile. Il punto culminante di questo attraversamento del confine è la caduta della porta del frigorifero nel camper, non è insolito per il nostro veicolo, che -probabilmente a causa dell'età- provoca costantemente "divertimento". Leatherman e nastro adesivo sono spesso utili.
La famosa "Carretera Austral" è la strada principale e in effetti l'unica strada verso sud del Cile. La costruzione è stata un progetto di prestigio dell'ex presidente Pinochet, ma ancora oggi -nonostante le forti attività del governo attuale- è principalmente una strada sterrata di qualità molto variabile e termina come una strada senza uscita a Villa O'Higgins. Punta Arenas è ancora raggiungibile su strada solo attraverso l'Argentina.
Arriviamo sulla Ruta 7 "Carretera Austral" nel villaggio di Villa Lucia. Le tracce della catastrofica frana di ghiaccio e fango di un vicino ghiacciaio tre anni fa sono ancora visibili per chilometri. Il villaggio è stato distrutto quasi completamente e circa 30 persone hanno perso la vita.
To avoid further boring driving trough the boring Argentinian’ Pampa we have to cross back to Chile. The highlight of this boarder-crossing is the falling off of the refrigerator’s door in the camper van – quite typically for the status of the equipment, a little worn out and always good for surprizes, so Leatherman and repair tape are helpful quite often.
The famous “Carretera Austral” is the main- and actually the only road to Chile’s south. Erection was a prestige project of former President Pinochet, but still today – beside strong activities by the actual government it is still mostly a gravel road of very different quality and ends up as a dead end street in Villa O’Higgens. Punte Arenas can be reached by road still via Argentina only.
We get to Ruta 7 “Carretera Austral” in the village Villa Lucia. The results of the catastrophic ice and mud slide from a nearby glacier three years ago still are visible over miles. The village was destroyed nearly completely and appx. 30 people were killed.
