On the Road again - Route 66

Monday, 01.10.2018:

Today it was time to leave the Grand Canyon. The destination was Twentynine Palms. However, we decided to take a little detour to visit Route 66.

After an hour of driving, we reached Williams, where we stocked up on supplies at a wonderful supermarket. From there, we headed to Route 66.

Seligman, our first stop, had already been visited by several tour buses. Many souvenir shops invited us to linger here.

After breakfast in Peach Springs, our next stop was Hackberry, a place that consisted only of one house. Here we could admire many items from the early days of Route 66, such as cars, vending machines, and gas pumps. According to an employee, the house was built in the 1930s. Almost 25 years ago, it became a souvenir shop. Unlike in Seligman, great attention to detail was paid here. The store had been lovingly designed. Everywhere there were also banknotes, license plates, greeting cards, and much more from people from all over the world.

The last place on our stretch of Route 66 before we left was Oatman. Exuding the charm of a western town, gold was previously mined in a mine there. To support the workers, they had donkeys. After the mine closed, the donkeys were released. Since then, they roam around the town and its surroundings and are considered a tourist attraction. Since it was already 6:00 p.m. when we arrived, some shops were already closed. However, there were hardly any tourists there.

Since we still had over 2 hours of driving to Twentynine Palms ahead of us, we soon left Oatman. The donkeys there really enhance the town.

We arrived in Twentynine Palms around 8:30 p.m. after driving in a straight line for up to 20 miles at a time. We quickly checked in to get something to eat at The Rib Co in time...
