Arthur's Pass, Castle Hill and Pancake Rocks

Pubblicato: 18.03.2023

We will leave the coast behind on Arthur's Pass. By the way, in New Zealand, you are never more than 128 km away from the sea. It's a good feeling to always have the Pacific Ocean at your back, isn't it? Arthur's Pass is the fastest connection between the East and West Coast. We drove to Castle Hill. This area is a must-see. Castle Hill used to be underwater. What remains are rocks of all sizes and shapes surrounded by a beautiful landscape. So we explored Castle Hill in a playful way. You just have to climb there, squeeze into every cave, and take lots of pictures. Simply wonderful, just like in a picture book. No wonder Castle Hill was chosen as a filming location for Narnia. With this scenery, I would also voluntarily go into battle.
We are heading back to the coast. We are moving more and more north. A little detour to the Pancake Rocks was definitely worth it. Unfortunately, the pancakes didn't fully come out due to the weather. However, they still scored points. Although I wouldn't want to eat them. I prefer pancakes made of flour, milk, and eggs. Pancakes made of sand, stones, and a touch of sea salt don't sound that appealing to me.
The day started and ended with rain. A really lousy weather, as we say in German, and one could say a sh** day is coming to an end. Well, sh** is a bit exaggerated. Let's just say it was one of the somewhat worse days. We hardly slept during the night because the car was constantly shaking due to the strong wind and it was pouring rain. Clothes damp, rain jacket soaked, and nerves a bit frayed. And while I was writing this and briefly thinking about the fireplace at home, suddenly it got bright. The sun managed to break through the thick layer of clouds in the last few minutes. It was magical! So the somewhat worse day turned out to be beautiful after all. Living in a camper can be exhausting, and on such days, it's even harder to keep your spirits up. But these are the moments when you suddenly forget everything. And everything is good.
Today we drove over 200 km. That was the longest stretch we have driven so far. We are now in the far north of the South Island. Our journey continues towards Abel Tasman. There, we want to hike the Coast Track over 3 days.
Cheers!
