We drove to Weta Cave Museum after a long breakfast.
Weta Workshop has worked on films such as The Lord of the Rings and has developed masks, costumes, and computer effects, for example. During our tour, we were first shown how the costumes are made. Armor and swords are mostly made of plastic, which is painted to look like steel. But Weta also made the masks and suits for the Orcs and Uruk-hai.
Fun fact: It took 11 hours to dress up Uruk-hai Lurtz in his full-body suit, and 5 hours to take it off.
Afterwards, we were shown the set of the remake of a 1960s series called 'The Thunderbirds'. The special thing about it is that it is a miniature set, as the characters are animated and only the background was filmed there.
It was super interesting to learn so much about the making of a film. Now we're going to watch the first part of The Lord of the Rings in our hostel and we're proud of our newfound background knowledge 😊
