Great Ocean Road

Pubblicato: 20.02.2020

Wednesday, 19.02.2020: After a very calm crossing from Devonport to Melbourne, which we spent in sleep seats in a slightly chilly sleeping room, we arrive in Melbourne at 6:30 am somewhat sleep-deprived. The unloading of the ferry is very quick. On our way to the highway, some roads are closed due to flooding. Our next destination is the Great Ocean Road. Although we have been here once before 15 years ago, we are once again overwhelmed by the impressive nature. Our actual destination for today was Apollo Bay. However, we drove on to Princetown. On the route was the Cape Otway Lighthouse. Here we were able to attend a lecture about the indigenous people and the colonization by the whites. Very interesting and informative. The function of the lighthouse and its importance for shipping were explained to us in detail. The lighthouse was in operation until 1994 and was then replaced by an automatic beacon. In addition, a telegraph station was built in 1859. A cable was laid from here to Tasmania. However, the cable did not last long. Instead, a signal station for ships was set up here.

Thursday, 20.2.2020: It is very foggy early today. Our next destination is the Twelve Apostles. Sometimes you get tears in your eyes, it's so beautiful here. However, the weather has held up great, so we were able to visit all the viewpoints. Just follow the photos. We continue our drive to Mount Gambier. There are many caves here, both below and above ground. We visit the Cave Garden in the city in the evening. The day ends with a beer at the nearby pub.
