2025 - May - Hamburg - Insider Tips

Hamburg is always worth a visit, and there is an incredible amount to do. Of course, a first visit will surely take you to the Landungsbrücken, the Elphi (Elbphilharmonie), or the legendary Reeperbahn.

But if you’ve already seen all that and don’t want to get swept away by all the other tourists, I might have a few tips up my sleeve for you. The list is, of course, not exhaustive – and will be continuously updated by me!

1. My favorite subway station: U4 Hafencity Universität

Do you know that feeling when you can’t stop snapping photos? That’s how I always feel at the changing illuminated light containers at the U4 station Hafencity Universität. These are meant to resemble the importance of the Port of Hamburg in their container shape.

On weekends and holidays, there’s even a small light and sound show every hour on the hour.

2. Willkomm-Höft – the ship welcoming facility

If you want to enjoy a truly relaxing day by the Elbe, there are many options – but no place compares to Willkomm-Höft in Wedel. Since 1952, ships from all over the world have been welcomed and sent off here – complete with national anthems!

Hard to believe: The loudspeaker system was recently out of order, and due to tight finances, everything was in jeopardy. Fortunately, a company repaired it free of charge. So – better go now than later!

Culinary delights are also well taken care of: from fish roll stands to fine dining.

3. The Bunker on Feldstraße

Admittedly – the place is no longer entirely secret, as the bunker has been near the Feldstraße subway station since World War II.

However, it has only been possible to climb it via the so-called “mountain path” since 2024. After many years of interim use, the bunker has been expanded by five floors and greened. Once you reach the top, you’ll be greeted by a panoramic view over Hamburg.

4. The Altonaer Balkon

Have you ever heard of this place as a non-Hamburger? I hadn’t until recently – until I stumbled upon it by chance.

The Altonaer Balkon is located about 27 meters above the Elbe on the Geest slope in Altona. From here, you have a great view of the harbor, the Köhlbrand Bridge, and the Elbe. Perfect for a little walk or a picnic on the park benches.

5. The Levantehaus

A place for shopping – but also for lingering. I love this small passage because it is so stylish: small, lovingly designed shops, great dining options, and many beautiful animal sculptures to discover.

6. The Penny Market on the Reeperbahn

If you’re out and about on the Reeperbahn anyway – then stop by this Penny Market! Rarely does a supermarket fit into its surroundings so well: garish neon signs, party atmosphere, and plenty of (semi-)ambiguous details. Pure culture!

7. Café Gnosa in Hamburg-St. Georg

The restaurant density in St. Georg is remarkable – but Café Gnosa is one of my classics.

They serve wonderful homemade cakes made by their own baker in the middle of the night in the basement. The hearty snacks and salads are also highly recommended.

The special charm lies in the interior: old furniture, real coffeehouse flair, nothing looks pieced together. The café even has its own Wikipedia entry – and rightly so.

8. The Gängeviertel & the project “Come to the Gänge!”

The Hamburg Neustadt was once a workers’ district with partly disastrous sanitary conditions – Robert Koch said in 1892 during his visit during the cholera outbreak: “I forget that I am in Europe!”

Much has been demolished since then or destroyed by war. What remains owes its existence often to initiatives like “Come to the Gänge!”.

A visit is worthwhile: The small courtyard of the project is colorful, alternative, and lively. Tours with historical context are also highly recommended.

9. Ship tour on a cruise ship

You won’t find this everywhere – and not even daily in Hamburg. But anyone who registers in advance can, for example, visit a ship from the AIDA fleet.

For newcomers or simply curious people, this is a great experience.
