Caen - Memorial and Castle

Our journey continued to Caen, the capital of the Lower Normandy region and the third largest city in Normandy.
Initially, however, we did not head to the center but to the “Mémorial-Musée de la Paix”.

The large, modern exhibition focuses on the landing of the Allies on June 6, 1944, at the beaches of Normandy, which marked the beginning of Germany's defeat in World War II.

The museum was established at the site of the former German command center for the defense of the beaches. Below lies the bunker system, which is partially integrated into the exhibition.

The exhibition also highlights other parts of European history, from Hitler's rise to power to the end of the Cold War.

We spent over three hours in the museum to thoroughly explore the exhibition.

As it was later than expected, we decided to stay overnight in Caen and went back to the city center.

The castle complex is open late into the evening, even though the museums within (Museum of Fine Arts and Museum of Normandy) were already closed.

We walked along the ramparts and admired the view as well as the various art installations in the area.

Afterward, we took a little stroll through the town before returning to the parking spot.
