Day 157 Around Quorn

For the next days we wanted to explore the Flinders Ranges. As the information in all the booklets, Lonely Planet and websites we have read were pretty sparse on the walks, we decided to head to the Port Augusta visitor information center. Well, first time we have been really disappointed with the service: there are no useful maps of the area and almost no information on the walks regarding directions, length and estimated time. There is some kind of overview for the Southern Flinders Ranges with a map showing some walks (although it is quite impossible to distinguish the five different greenish walks) and a list of walks with length and duration information, but the map and list of walks had almost no overlap. The visitor information center only gave the advice to use an app where there are maps - just the maps were the same as the print-outs, so not very helpful. Very strange experience for us, given that all other National Parks so far had good maps, good information on walks regarding length, difficulty and duration (although we did the walks almost always in a shorter time, but that always fits in a day).

So with the sparse information we had, we decided to drive to Quorn and have a look around that area. The highlight of the surrounding is Death Rock with the pool. Well, we drove there, walked with hundreds of flies to the pool and the Death Rock and did not really understand what is supposed to be special about this puddle of mud.

Nevertheless, we were driving on this scenic drive past some 'historic sites', where no house or anything like that was left, to the Proby´s Grave, which is the grave of a 24-year old Britisch man, who wanted to explore Australia in the 19th century and had build the first station in the area. We also stopped at the Buckaringa Lookout and walked up the hill to the little stone hill for views of the area. All in all, we found the sights pretty disappointing and the best were the butterflies flying around. Stuart enjoyed the most the interaction with the local wallabies at Quorn.
