Day 40 - Trip from Wellington to Tongariro National Park

We start our day with a walk to the Wellington Cable Car. The cable car ride is short but steep, offering a great view of the city. The ride is somewhat reminiscent of the funicular in Stuttgart. Once we reach the top of the hill, we find ourselves in the middle of the Wellington Botanic Garden, where we can take some photos of the city. Then we walk back to the city through the Botanic Garden. The short hike is pleasant, as we will be spending more time in the car later in the afternoon.

We walk past Tinakori Road into the downtown area of Wellington and pass by Oriental Beach before reaching our car. We then drive back to our hotel for the past two nights to pick up our luggage. After that, we embark on the approximately 320 km journey to Tongariro National Park.
