Pure Brazil in Salvador

Pubblicato: 22.04.2017

When we take the bus from the airport towards downtown, we can already see that this city is different from São Paulo. Very run-down buildings and hardly any skyscrapers! Unfortunately, the bus stops a bit far from our hostel and we get to know the downtown in a different way. Small alleys go up and down, the streets are made of uneven cobblestones - at 28 degrees Celsius, we struggle across the downtown until we finally arrive. The hostel is a family house and the owners only speak Portuguese - luckily, we speak about 5 words of Portuguese! 😃 So, the next problem: water shortage, so minimal showers and conservative use when cooking! When we get under the shower, only a few drops come out and that's it - so no shower today! To flush the toilet, you always have to start it with some water from the bucket. Locals gather outside and listen to music in their homes. There is a good atmosphere everywhere. The next morning, we explore the old town. There are colorful old houses and magnificent churches everywhere. Here and there, some locals sing or play drums. Africans sell their food and children play in the side streets! This is probably the real Brazil. At 30 degrees Celsius, we marvel at something new on every corner! Then we take an elevator to the lower town for 0.15 R (~4 cents). Here is the port and the main market, but there is hardly anything else to see! On the way home, we enjoy a fresh Caipiroska and a pastel next to a drum group!
