"...that it could get a bit uncomfortable!"
We want to pick up this half sentence again to make it easier to start off the following day (Wednesday)! Because already before breakfast we could completely abandon our well-scheduled holiday plan for the coming days (typical German - do you remember?!). From "a bit uncomfortable" it turned into gusts of wind up to wind force 10 and a clear recommendation to leave the place! From the broadest Scots we gathered that if we had traveled alone, he would have easily told us "rrrough it out! But with the wee one, you betterrrr take the tent down.".At the beginning of our holiday planning, and again and again during it, we played through some scenarios of how we would deal with six days of continuous rain, constantly wet clothes, a sick child, etc. We also occasionally entertained the absolutely absurd possibility of breaking down the tent and switching to a hotel due to higher powers. But this option was generally dismissed with a "it won't happen!". That this is exactly what has now become reality after just two nights overwhelmed us (you can probably imagine). After a short consideration (just under an hour), we started to quickly dismantle our palace (about three hours). At the same time, we received rejection after rejection from various B&Bs in the vicinity for a nightly stay! This must be how Mary and Joseph felt a few years ago. Except they would have fit comfortably in a single room! But Ida sleeps so she needs a 1.40 meter mattress all to herself...The only hotel in the area that still had a spot available wanted a bargain £400 for two nights. However, we declined because of the house's miserable garden design. We simply wouldn't have felt comfortable... But time was running out, because in addition to the fresh breeze, it had also started to rain slightly. So we decided to stay at an inn two and a half hours away from the current location at Loch Ness! While we were busy packing up, rolling up sleeping bags, and playing car Tetris, Ida danced half-naked through the tent and rain to Scottish rock music! That's what you call express integration. Finally, after some fits of anger, curses, but also many laughs, everything was packed up, the tent was stored away, and the first part of the camping adventure ended prematurely with wet clothes on our bodies! You understand, we hope, that we didn't take a single picture, even though we would have made a wonderful motif with the flapping tent fighting against the wind. On the drive to the "Craigdarroch Inn" (through stunning scenery on single track roads), we used the time to reflect. The second campsite is only booked from Sunday. So, two days need to be planned anew in a child-friendly way.The trip to Skye, the longer planned hike in Glencoe, the white beaches in Morar - everything we had in mind would have involved a lot of driving. In the end, we reluctantly decided to cancel everything and drive to the northwest to Clachtoll on Friday. Thank goodness the Scots are a very uncomplicated and accommodating people: our early arrival is no problem for the campsite operators. When we arrived at the hotel, which can only be reached via a dirt track, we felt like we were transported straight back to the 19th century because of the interior. Old sofas in front of a flickering fireplace, dark wood, decorated ceilings, and questionable horse sculptures adorn the whole house. The room is overloaded in a Rosamunde Pilcher style with floral wallpaper and curtains in pastel colors.
For our taste, nothing here fits color-wise or pattern-wise, but somehow this kitsch belongs.
Ida was so exhausted from the stressful day that she voluntarily crawled into her (own big) bed!
Tomorrow, once the continuous rain has subsided, we want to see what the area has to offer. Loch Nes was never planned, so this part of the map is completely unknown to us. But there is supposed to be a beautiful waterfall here, which is connected to a short hike. So hopefully, the unplanned move here will still bring us something beautiful. We'll keep you posted!
