We spend weeks in beautiful North Castile, enjoying the relaxed and friendly Spanish atmosphere in the villages and towns. From Ledesma by the almost dried-up Almendasee, through Salamanca and Huerta, we constantly discover great new places where we can park our Hummel. The Spanish municipalities make a real effort to make all the tourists and vanlifers happy by providing free parking spots with water. We go with the flow, stay in one place for 2-3 days, and then drive just a few kilometers to the next one.
Somewhere by the Almendasee, we find an amazing lost place. An abandoned youth camp by the almost dried-up lake, with intriguing buildings and a desert-like landscape. We go on long hikes on the lakebed, and the landscape is almost surreal here with all the stones in an otherwise desert-like environment. There are tarantulas and poisonous vipers here. We always keep our eyes open for where we step.
We collect chamomile to dry, bake bread and cakes, and Kilian tries to go fishing for trout. Unfortunately, we have potatoes for dinner once again :).
By chance, a few days later, we end up in the small town of Madrigal de las Atlas Torres and we are thrilled. A well-preserved medieval town in the middle of nowhere awaits us. Monastery ruins, churches, city walls, and much more to explore. We are the only tourists here, walking through the narrow alleys with our two dogs, and the people look at us in surprise. Madrigal is really somewhere in the middle of nowhere in North Castile and we really like it here.
A few days later, while looking for a laundromat, we end up in Avila. Nothing warned us beforehand, and we are blown away by this magnificent medieval city. A superbly preserved city wall that completely surrounds this town and where you can walk along awaits us. When you step inside, you suddenly find yourself in the Middle Ages. A cathedral, countless churches, squares, narrow streets, and countless old buildings to see. The parking space is right by the town, and there are endless walking possibilities by the river outside. For me, a lover of old city centers, this is paradise and we stay in Avila for days, celebrating Kilian's birthday with good food and enjoying city life to the fullest.
Castile is definitely worth a visit. So many great cities and breathtaking nature await. There are endless parking options for campers. We are thrilled and can't get enough of it.
