56. Tag: As the low pressure area still dominates the country today, bad weather program is announced again. Today we go to Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece. Everyone knows the city by name, but at least we couldn't associate much with it.
We have taken the city tour from Tini & Luki's "Lonely Planet" travel guide. It starts at Heptapyrgion. The Byzantine fortress, which later served as a prison, towers high above the city. In good weather, you should have a great view from here. Today everything can only be seen vaguely. But at least it's dry, and it stays dry for 95% of our way.
We slowly make our way past various historical buildings, monasteries, churches and excavations towards the harbor. On the way, there are various pastries again, all good. Especially the croissant roll with pistachio filling. Sooo buttery! It's slowly getting better culinarily. The mile along the promenade to the "White Tower" completes the round. Finally back up to the fortress, where our Nuggy is parked. After that, it's enough.
Summary: In comparison to Athens, the city has significantly fewer "real highlights", but it can serve with a more appealing cityscape away from the attractions. The many young people on the street contribute to a positive overall impression. On the other hand, you haven't really missed out if you haven't been here yet.
After about an hour's drive, Nuggy finds a parking space at Psakoudia Beach, between Kassandra (left finger) and Sithonia (middle finger).
