Pre-report – Shotover River, Queenstown - 2 days to go | New Zealand Final
Ralph Böttcher – On the way to controlled chaos
After tomorrow I will enter a canyon that encompasses everything that has shaped me in my life: risk, trust, boundary experience, mental strength. And yes – I feel a deep excitement. Not a nervous twitch, but that honest tingle in my stomach that says: It's getting serious now.
The Shotover River is not a tourist stroll. It is rough, narrow, unpredictable.
Class 4–5 – the zone where mistakes are not theoretical, but real.
Exactly there I will be sitting: wedged in the boat, paddle in hand, the current as both an opponent and a partner. And I am excited. Not because of the danger – I know that from other life situations – but because of the intensity. This river is a metaphor: you decide nothing alone, you trust, you act, you give in to the dynamics.
The drive through the Skippers Canyon will make it clear to me beforehand what I'm getting into: steep walls, sharp curves, a path that looks like it was built only to test courage.
And there I sit – an entrepreneur who knows limits but has also pushed boundaries. I have experienced situations where my freedom was taken away and I still maintained my composure. Now, I voluntarily sit in a boat that shoots me through a 170-meter-long darkness – the Oxenbridge Tunnel – and feel this mix of fear, anticipation, and a kind of appreciation for the moment.
I notice my inner voice coming up: Why are you doing this?
The answer is simple: Because I want to live. Because I want to feel. Because I want to know where my edge lies today – not yesterday.
The guides will give clear commands. I will follow. Not because I have to, but because it is an unusual yet valuable experience: I let go of control. I relinquish. I accept that competence sometimes lies outside of myself. And that's what excites me. It is a genuine test of my trust – in people, processes, and myself.
I know: As soon as the boat faces the first rapids, my body will sound the alarm, but my mind will be clear. I will laugh, curse, scream, breathe. I will feel everything – without filters.
This pre-report is not a hero’s story. It is a confession. 🧡🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿
I go in there with heart, tension, respect – and with an emotional openness that rarely accompanies me. Maybe that's the true reason for my excitement.
After tomorrow it will be loud. Tomorrow it will be wet. Tomorrow it will be real.
