Chilly Milly in Philly

On August 2nd, we left Washington in the morning and took a Greyhound bus to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The bus ride took 3 hours with a stop in Baltimore. Every seat was booked, and each of us had to settle for a different neighbor, but at least we got to interact with locals again.

In Philadelphia, we continued to our new accommodation with an Uber (which, by the way, is an absolutely genius system and should definitely become more popular in Germany).

This time we stayed in 2 private rooms with a family of 6. When we arrived, only our host father was there, but he turned out to be very warm and helpful. Also, compared to the hostel in Washington, the 2 rooms and the bathroom were an oasis of relaxation and rest:

No strangers as roommates, real duvets, and enough space to unpack our backpacks and spread out. So, as I said, pure luxury!

On the day of arrival, there wasn't much on the agenda except for shopping and finally cooking something healthy, so we slept for a whopping 11 hours on the first night.

The next two days we spent sightseeing, which was quite relaxed since the city is not as overloaded with attractions as Washington.

Nevertheless, we visited the Independence Hall (where the Declaration of Independence was signed and is thus the birthplace of the United States), the Liberty Bell, and so on.

We were particularly impressed by the Reading Terminal Market, where countless different food options and other little things were available for purchase.

The huge variety attracted us as well as countless other people, so we had to weave our way through the market to not miss any stands.

Of course, the typical Philadelphia Cheese Steak could not be missed, so we enjoyed it at the alleged inventors (Pat's King of Steaks) (at least the meat lovers among us). And it must be said: the fries are overpriced, but the steak is pretty tasty.

On August 5th, we continued to New York City in the morning, the city that never sleeps in contrast to us ;-).

We were all looking forward to our stay there, but we have to admit that we would have liked to stay with the family for longer too, as the parents, all 4 children, and the dog Ginger have become dear to our hearts.

Each of us could imagine a year as an au pair with them.
