Christchurch is one of the largest cities on the South Island. On February 22, 2011, the area was hit by an earthquake that caused great devastation and collapsed much of the city center. Only remnants of the city's landmark, the Christchurch Cathedral, and the surrounding buildings can be seen. This place evokes a sense of unease when you see what this beautiful nature is capable of. The church is still temporarily secured against the risk of collapse. The city is slowly recovering. There are already many new buildings combined with the remaining old ones. A memorial site for the people who died in the earthquake has been built along the river in the city. A place of peace and reflection. Nevertheless, six years later, the effects are still visible through the numerous vacant spaces between buildings.

In addition to this realization, we also discovered an old alley that looked like something out of Disneyland or New Orleans. We were just waiting for Mickey Mouse to come out of the door.

Even an old tram (for tourists) runs through the streets of Christchurch. We also discovered the most beautiful and largest playground we had ever seen. Here, the mini All Blacks can have fun and you wish you could be a child again. Next door were barbecue areas where it felt like all the parents with children in the city had gathered on Sundays to enjoy the day off together.

We also visited the Canterbury Museum and then relaxed in the Botanic Gardens with plenty of sunshine.

Zum Zeitpunkt des Erdbebens war ein guter Freund dort und da hatten wir ganz schön Angst! Zum Glück ist ihm nichts passiert! 👍👍
