Solo una questione di peso

Briefly, let's set a schedule for today: The flight leaves at 15:10, so we need to be there 2 hours in advance, refuel the car and drop it off means leaving at 12:00. Unfortunately, we had to leave the apartment at 10:00 and didn’t find anything better to do than jump in the pool. It was wonderful to get out of the heavy hiking boots and jeans. You’re probably wondering why we don’t fly in shorts and flip-flops.

Airlines and their baggage rules can be so cruel. You might remember our 3rd article - 'Now it begins'. That issue of the overweight suitcase. 28 kg for mine and 26 kg for Carsten's bag. For all flights, this means being underweight, just not for today. You might know the magic number of 23 from your own vacations. This magic number forced us into the heavy hiking boots, jeans, and 3 jackets. Additionally, in a strange way, our backpack has become significantly heavier.

But we made it. Quantas does not force us to our knees. Some call it stinginess, we call it challenges, and they are there to be mastered. Overweight fees can be paid by anyone.

And then we get into a plane that is not even a quarter full. 28 kg in the suitcase (instead of the backpack and on us) wouldn't have tipped the plane. But so far, so good.

And whenever I sit on a plane, the song by Reinhard May comes to mind: 'Above the clouds, freedom is supposed to be limitless, all fears, all worries they say remain hidden below and then...'

Did I get the earworm in you too?

What's important is that we landed safely - in Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory (up north). Named after the naturalist Charles Darwin - all of us know him from biology class (long, long ago). Darwin is a relatively young city, founded in 1869, a hundred years after Thomas Cook, who thus cannot be considered the founder. It was strategically important for the English during World War II. In 1942, it was completely bombed by the Japanese. What one finds a lot here, besides the most diligent beer drinkers in the world and sand by the sea - are crocodiles. The harmless 'freshies' for humans and the man-eating 'salties'. We do not want to meet either in the wild.
