On Wednesday morning, I took a shared taxi from San Cristóbal to Toniná, this Maya pyramid is the highest pyramid in Mesoamerica, with a height of 86 m, but not as well known as Chichen Itzá, Palenque, Tikal and the like. Therefore, apart from me, there were very few other tourists there. A guide led me through 7 levels past some murals, Maya calendars, temples, palaces, and tombs to the highest point, the Temple of the Sun. After that, I continued to Palenque, where I spent the next 3 nights.
The next day, I went to the Agua Azul waterfalls. The hiking trail upstream passed many large and small waterfalls. After the extensive walk, I certainly deserved a swim. Before heading back to Palenque, I made a stop at the Misol Ha waterfall. Apart from the large waterfall, I visited a cave with a small waterfall and also took a refreshing swim here.
I saved my last day in Palenque for the Palenque ruins, which are among the most important archaeological sites in Mexico. I was there at 8 o'clock and enjoyed the tranquility in the jungle. Here too, there was a palace, several temples, a ball court, and a few houses to explore, as well as a museum. I was able to go up and down most of the stairs, and in the palace in particular, I could go into some tunnels and admire the remains of the facade.
