Unfortunately, the sky was very cloudy this morning as well. Nevertheless, we wanted to take a closer look at the Øksfjordjøkelen (glacier). We had to lace up our hiking boots and follow a narrow path along the fjord. We were on the way for about 3.5 hours and discovered some beautiful stones (El) and waterfalls (Juliane) in addition to the glacier, and once again a new exhilarating quote from El: 'I have a shadow!'
No one doubts that either! To be fair, she discovered her shadow even though there was no sun to be seen. :)
After a well-deserved pasta boost, we headed towards Alta. Highly motivated, I purchased a parking ticket for an hour in the center. Already knowing that the city is a ghost town. Our first stop was supposed to be the Northern Lights Cathedral. We should have realized even then that something was wrong, because there was no one to be seen anywhere! To all travelers, be advised - Saturday and Sunday it's closed! :(
The further exploration of the center took a whopping 15 minutes, including the way back. If you're tight on travel time, you can safely skip Alta.
But the highlight of the day was still to come. El had found a parking space near a canyon as a camping spot. Nothing wrong with that, and the idea of visiting the largest canyon in Northern Europe sounded very promising. Unfortunately, the last seven kilometers were an unpaved, very uneven, uphill road that demanded everything from our motorhome - but we made it!
