Hello dear ones,
My first week in Christchurch is over and I have already experienced a lot. I actively searched for a job, visited almost every restaurant, cafe or bar that I saw. I also signed up with an agency and submitted a few applications online. And I am happy to report that I found a job :)
I am now working at The Miller Bar & Cafe in Addington, which is about 10 minutes away from my room. Yesterday, on April 1st, I had my first official working day after working for two hours as a trial the evening before. I really like the place and I am not only happy that I am now earning money, but also that the people who work there are very nice and the guests are also super nice. The Millers is a regular pub for many people in the area and I have the feeling that everyone knows everyone there. And everyone is patient with the German girl who doesn't quite understand the accent yet :D
On Friday, I finally motivated myself to enjoy the beautiful weather and went hiking. I drove to a bay called Taylor's Mistake and started walking along the beach and then along the coast. This coastal section was used as a military base during World War II and you can visit the remaining buildings and bunkers. This hike was not only beautiful from a scenic perspective, but also educational. For me, it was a perfect start, as the ascent was not too bad and I managed the 10 km in 3 hours. However, it was strenuous enough to cause some muscle soreness :D
Otherwise, I often enjoy the view from my room and talk to my various roommates about their experiences here. I really feel comfortable here and I'm happy that my first stop is so good. With the help of one of my roommates, I also took care of my car, as a few minor repairs had to be made. I polished my foggy headlight, changed a light bulb, cleaned my windshield wipers, repaired the stereo system, and topped up the coolant. They may be small things, but I'm proud of myself :)
That's it for this week. For next week, I would like to find a second job, so that I can earn enough money to finance my next travel segment, and if the weather continues to be great, go hiking and take photos. Let's see if everything works out. I will keep you posted.
See you soon,
Jessi
