Off to the island

Buga: 01.03.2019

We enjoyed our days in Hanoi, but the cool weather and the weather forecast for northern Vietnam made us change our travel plans. Instead of hiking in Sa Pa and a boat tour in Halong Bay in the cold, we are now experiencing island life and heat in the far southwest of Vietnam, on Phu Quoc Island. Afterwards, we will travel from south to north and do the northern hike at a time that promises better hiking weather.

So now it's a lazy island week.

However, the first impression of Phu Quoc was not convincing. We found accommodation in Duong Dong, which is the main town. It is dominated by Russian package tourists, if I may say so generally. Along the road, there are restaurants with the charm of bus shelters, alternating with supermarkets and karaoke bars.

But when we reached the older districts and the port, we were reconciled. It still looks authentically bustling and lively there.

The fishermen or their wives sell their catch at the fish market, which is located right at the harbor and people come on mopeds to shop, so to speak, 'drive-in' style.
In addition to clothes and knick-knacks, the night market also offers plenty of food stalls. While we were quite cautious about eating at street stalls during the first few weeks, we now trust our digestive system with anything and eagerly try all the things on offer.
With a moped that we rented for two days, we can also reach beaches without crowds. And from tomorrow on, we will spend three days in a resort further north that has a beautiful private beach.
Construction is taking place everywhere on the island and some huge hotel complexes are being built. It will be exciting to see how that develops. At the moment, it looks frightening.
