Vung Tau / Vietnam

Buga: 16.11.2017

12/11/17 - 14/11/17

After a three-hour bus ride, we arrived at the coastal city of Vung Tau.

Here is home to the fourth largest statue of Jesus in the world. In over 35 degrees Celsius, we fought our way up the 800 steps to reach it on the mountain. When we reached the top, sweat was pouring down our bodies 😀 It was truly impressive how small the statue looked from below and how huge it actually was when standing underneath it. Unfortunately, we didn't know that there was a church inside the statue that we had to go through to reach the top. That's why we were not dressed appropriately (we probably would have passed out after only 200 steps with long clothes anyway) and couldn't go up to the statue. Too bad... But it was still worth it!

The beach in Vung Tau was not really nice. The sea was also dirty and too wavy to swim. It felt like it had the same temperature as on land, so it didn't provide any relief 😀

We found the locals a bit strange, who walked along the beach all day with metal detectors and occasionally stuck their shovels in the sand and dug. But somehow nobody found anything. What exactly they were looking for or hoping to find remains a mystery to us until today...

So apart from the statue, there was nothing special in Vung Tau, and yet we had to stay longer than planned because our next stop, Nha Trang, had to be cancelled. The city was hit by the strongest typhoon in the last 16 years a few days ago, which flooded the entire city and caused a lot of destruction...
