Lake Chapala is the largest freshwater lake in Mexico, according to Wikipedia, and is worth a day trip. We set off around noon on our own, without a travel agency. The bus station in Guadalajara had a charm reminiscent of days long past. We bought tickets for just €2.50. We found our way easily, and I enjoyed my second cup of coffee.
The town of Chapala felt like a northern Italian seaside resort to me - quiet, pleasantly temperate, a bit too conservative. Thanks to Andy's Spanish negotiation skills, we were able to secure an inexpensive boat tour to Scorpion Island, Isla de los Alacranes. We only spent 30 minutes there, which was enough.
We spent the afternoon on the promenade overlooking the hazy lake. In the evening, we returned to Guadalajara and pre-booked a taxi to the airport for the next day at 3:30 AM.
