Day 43 and 44 by car through Chiloe - an island in Chile

Buga: 08.01.2024

Day 43 and 44

We were lucky - a hotel gave us a rental car for 50 euros a day. Was there insurance? I have no idea, I don't understand Spanish. But everything went without any problems - well, except for one trip up the mountain...

We start our journey. Finally behind the wheel again. Excellent!

There were 30,000 inhabitants passing through Castro - but not much of that was noticeable. The people here drive so considerately and relaxed. Rarely experienced like this. I was finally able to drive my first piece of the Panamericana myself out of Castro *.*.

Cool!

It went south. From there we wanted to go to a national park. According to the sign there were still 18 kilometers - 18 hard kilometers. Gravel road - unimaginable. The last 4 kilometers didn't work at all and forced us to stop. Wasted time. A pity. Unfortunately, the ride was like this in every park until the afternoon. We haven't been able to get much out of the island so far. At around 3:30 p.m. we drove to the next park after a delicious snack and cocoa. The routes here were also terrible. We continued to torture the car and were now allowed to hike. The Tabanos were a nuisance. Brakes. Large. Indescribable. Annoying.

After a late hike we were able to marvel at the waterfall. Only 3 people were here with us. Finally a quiet place.

In the evening we drove a little further to the beach. This was beautiful and reminiscent of the coasts of Denmark.

By the way, since that day we no longer go out to eat here in Chile. Chile is the Switzerland of South America - the prices are more expensive than in Germany!

The next day we drove to Queilon and took a look at the town - we had also booked a boat tour here - penguins, seals and dolphins were on the menu.

After the excursion we drove to a few viewpoints that were not worth mentioning. And one of these points really gave us the award for best closed eyes and through. Going down was easy - going up was just a matter of running and praying. The road was so steep and unpaved that the loose stones on the road could not support the car.

But we managed everything and the hostel was happy with the delivery without any dents.

In the evening we took the bus down to the ferry. It was supposed to start at 11 p.m. But more about that in the next report 😱
