Met another German girl (Katja) at a billiard event at the hostel last night. She decided to join our trip to Rottnest island.
Also met other people which will head south within the next days too.. Maybe we’ll catch up later on the road.
Wednesday morning, 08:30am:
Since we haven’t booked the trip to Rottnest yet I went to the Peterpans (travel agency) desk at the reception.
Booked 3 “return tickets” for the ferry... took me a few minutes to realize a “return ticket” includes both ways 🧐.
Since there wasn’t much time left to get to the ferry we called ourselves an Uber. I’ve forgot my sunglasses at the hostel 😭 luckily I got my Boxhaus cap with me 🤩
Arrived at Fremantle ferry terminal just in time we turned our printed vouchers in for the ferry tickets.
It’s a 30 min ride to the island.
Didn’t took 10 minutes to see the first quokka... haven’t seen some much cuteness in a while 🙈 these animals look so peaceful, friendly and happy! Managed to take a few good shots. Portrait mode of iPhone XS worked like a charm
We picked up our bikes and discovered the island... went to nice beaches and lighthouses. Stunning!
Also found some kind of vacation resorts... very tiny small houses. The bright color of the buildings paired with the white sand made me feel a little bit like I’m on Mos Eisley (planet Tatooine, home of Luke Skywalker, Star Wars).
About 25C and a lot of wind weren’t the best conditions for snorkeling but perfect for biking and quokka spotting. So that’s what we did.
When fighting the wind whilst climbing a hill with the mountain bike I thought of “Neujahr” by Juli Zeh:
>> Erster-Erster, Erster-Erster <<
Another thing that reminded me of something were the abandoned railway tracks with the very unique looking trees and the dry earth. I felt like every second the train from “Westworld” (series by Jonathan Nolan) comes around the corner and a new day begins...
After we got back to Fremantle we tried to get to Cottesloe beach to watch the sunset from Tommy’s car. Unfortunately the Uber took too long to arrive and we didn’t make it on time. Still a nice view though!
After a hot shower at the hostel we went out to the mustang bar for a few drinks. We’ve had a nice evening at the pub... including live music!
Went to bed late.
Tomorrow morning I will leave the hostel. Tommy will pick me up with the Land Rover. We’re going to pick up some food for a few days and go south. Direction of Margaret River.
Cheers
J
