On a beach tour with Henning Mankell

Publié: 17.07.2018

I drive from Öland to the southeast of Sweden. The beach of Sandhammaren is said to be one of the most beautiful and warmest in all of Sweden, so I am mentally preparing myself for thousands of people, preferably Germans. To my surprise, there is surprisingly little going on for a Sunday afternoon and the number of German campers is also limited. Unfortunately, the Swedish Right of Public Access prohibits overnight stays on such beaches... well... you can't have everything. By now, I can handle water temperatures around 15 degrees quite well and I'm almost starting to sweat when I arrive in the cool water. It's an amazing 22 degrees.

Along the coast from Sandhamn to Trelleborg, there are more or less popular and busy beaches, so bathing continues seamlessly from the past week. The closer you get to Trelleborg, the more campers you find. Standing alone somewhere at night is no longer an option, but there are more acquaintances with whom you can exchange travel experiences or give some tips to those who have just arrived.

Just before Trelleborg, I pass by Ystad. The city where Henning Mankell lets his detective Wallander investigate. A sleepy little town, where you can eat extremely well and spend a perfect afternoon at the beach.

On the last day, I just hang out at the campsite, use the time to shower and pack the bus, and pay a little visit to Malmö.

The anticipation of going home has also set in... for family, for friends, and also for the trips with the bus that will surely follow.
