In the immediate vicinity of Puebla are the active volcano Popocatépetl and the Iztaccihuatl mountain in the Iztapopo National Park.
Here I definitely want to go hiking and finally find the local provider 'Unlimited Experience'. During the consultation, I am asked if I have experience hiking at an altitude of 4500 meters. Although I don't, I consider myself to be in excellent physical condition otherwise. In the next second, I briefly think about the countless tacos, quesadillas, molotes and beer of the past days and weeks.
The next morning, I am picked up from the hotel by my personal guide, Susana. We drive to the national park in about two hours. The hike on the Iztaccihuatl begins at about 3900 meters. I quickly start to breathe heavily, but then I adapt to the surroundings quite quickly. Susana repeatedly asks me about my well-being, sometimes the hikes have to be aborted due to the unfamiliar altitude. But we easily make it to the planned endpoint, where she prepares me a coffee with the portable gas cooker she brought along.
There are various legends about the origin of the two mountains that strongly resemble 'Romeo and Juliet'.
