A bordo en el Pacífico Sur // On board in the South Seas

¡Set sail! Durante el fin de semana fue hora de subir al barco, instalarse en nuestras cabinas, comprar muchos víveres, guardar todo y partir hacia las hermosas islas.

Desde nuestro puerto de partida en Raiatea, primero hicimos un viaje muy corto a Tahaa. Allí recibimos la fantástica noticia de que podíamos navegar a Maupiti. Dado que la entrada al atolón de Maupiti solo está abierta bajo ciertas condiciones de olas y clima (y a veces permanece cerrada durante semanas o incluso meses), llegamos en el momento justo.

Así que nos dirigimos a la impresionante Maupiti, una pequeña isla en el noroeste que aún está casi intacta por el turismo. Un paraíso de esnórquel y playas de ensueño ya nos estaban esperando para ser explorados.

Desde Maupiti nos dirigimos al este hasta Huahine. Además de esnórquel y tiempo de playa, también exploramos ambas islas en coche de alquiler. Después de un largo día lleno de impresiones, algo de compras y deliciosa comida, regresamos cansados y felices a nuestro barco.

Ahora hemos izado las velas y nos dirigimos a Raiatea, Tahaa y Bora Bora. Para quienes están mirando un mapa y se preguntan por qué estamos zigzagueando así — es por el viento. Desafortunadamente, los usualmente constantes vientos alisios del sureste son actualmente cualquier cosa menos estables. Manu, nuestro capitán, ya está maldiciendo regularmente sobre las cambiantes y apenas predecibles condiciones del viento.

¡Set sail! Over the weekend it was time to get on the boat, move into our cabins, buy plenty of groceries, stow everything away, and head off toward the beautiful islands.

From our starting harbor on Raiatea we first made a very short trip to Tahaa. There we received the fantastic news that we could sail to Maupiti. Since the entrance to Maupiti’s atoll is only open under certain wave and weather conditions (and sometimes stays closed for weeks or even months), we arrived at exactly the right moment.

So off we went to stunning Maupiti, a small island in the northwest that is still almost untouched by tourism. A snorkeling paradise and dreamlike beaches were already waiting to be explored.

From Maupiti we headed east to Huahine. Besides snorkeling and beach time, we also explored both islands by rental car. After a long day full of impressions, some shopping and delicious food, we returned to our boat tired and happy.

Now we’ve set the sails and are on our way to Raiatea, Tahaa, and Bora Bora. For anyone looking at a map and wondering why we’re zigzagging around like this — it’s because of the wind. Unfortunately, the usually steady southeast trade winds are currently anything but steady. Manu, our skipper, is already cursing regularly about the constantly changing and barely predictable wind conditions.
