"Avenue of the Giants" - even more tree giants 😉 in California

Publicado: 16.07.2023

Just this much in advance: We survived the stay and the night in Eureka 😊 and the car wasn't broken into either...

After a delicious breakfast, albeit with undrinkable coffee, we left the Victorian hotel in the familiar coastal fog. For the "Dislike-Coffee" we thought we were defective by packing delicious muffins and other small "delicious messes" from the buffet for on the go.

The distance from Eureka to San Rafael just before San Francisco is about 250 miles. The route was loosened up with a trip over the "Avenue of the Giants", 50 miles behind Eureka, in the meanwhile sunny weather. This avenue runs parallel to Highway 101 through the giant redwoods that grow over 100 feet tall and are several hundred years old! have. This road is over 30 miles long and dark because of the great height of the trees. Fabulous views along the trees up into the air are offered again... Simply brilliant and recommendable!

On the way there was another alleged highlight: the drive-thru tree. We would have liked to see it, but the area was not visible and the entrance fee for behind the fence was $15. Too much for not knowing what to expect. There was also no pictorial representation of the tree. At least on our entire trip through the Redwood Park, we hadn't seen a large or wide tree trunk that a car would have fit through ... so the offer was a bit dubious.

But at some point there will be enough trees and enough wondering and a change is needed. We arrived in San Rafael in the afternoon, moved into our room, watched a little HGTV (Thorsten's favorite TV show in the US) and ate the delicious baked goods from the last accommodation.

Tomorrow we continue into nature over the Golden Gate Bridge through San Francisco. Trees again for a change – to be seen in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park (the day after tomorrow, just corrected by the tour guide, see comment) … We'll see tomorrow how these differ from the redwoods.

So see you (day after) tomorrow... (and thanks for following my blog diligently 😉)
